高居翰教授（Professer James Cahill），1926年出生于美国加州，是当今中国艺术史研究的权威之一。1950年，毕业于柏克莱加州大学东方语文学系。之后，又分别于1952年和1958年，取得安娜堡密西根大学艺术史硕士和博士学位，主要追随已故知名学者罗越（Max Loehr），修习中国艺术史。 高居翰教授与妻子曹星原女士定居于柏克莱。曹星原女士本人为艺术家兼艺术史研究者。两人计划每年定期往来北京，进行艺术史的研究工作。

在中国历史中，元代是一个“文化衰落”的时期，异族统治、科举废弛、经济凋敝，给文人的精神世界蒙上了一层灰色，然而当他们转借书山画水以寄托生命时，却掀起了一场别开生面的“绘画革命”。 本书对元代绘画史进行了通盘梳理，以元代最富特色的山水画为主线，从元初的郑思肖、龚开、钱选等“遗民”画家，讲到古法新制、以《水村图》开创新风格的赵孟頫；从元中期师法院画的盛懋、摹照“董巨”的吴镇等“保守派”代表，讲至元末个人主义盛行背景下，黄公望、倪瓒等人如何开拓风气创作《富春山居图》《荣膝斋图》等的典范作品。在山水画之外，亦兼论及花鸟、人物、墨竹墨梅等画科在元代的发展。不仅有细致入微的风格分析，也将时代、社会、文化、思潮融入画史变迁的宏阔视角，由此印证了元代绘画如何在对宋画之“反动”和唐五代传统的继承上，发展出自己崭新的面貌——简淡天真、朴实无华、不求形似。 -- 在宋朝之...(展开全部)
